Portugal Claim Late Win over Czech Republic in UEFA Nations League Clash

Own Goal Seals Victory for Conceicao's Team

Lisbon, Portugal (JUNE 18, 2024) - Portugal snatched a dramatic late victory over the Czech Republic in a thrilling UEFA Nations League encounter at the Estadio da Luz. Substitute Fabio Conceicao scored the winning goal in the 89th minute, sending the home crowd into raptures. The Czech Republic had taken the lead through a well-taken strike from Jakub Provod, but an unfortunate own goal from Lukas Hranac leveled the scores.

The match was played at a high tempo, with both teams creating chances throughout. Portugal dominated possession but struggled to break down the Czech defense. The Czechs, meanwhile, were dangerous on the break and looked threatening whenever they got forward.

The turning point came in the 75th minute when Hranac inadvertently turned a cross from Vitinha into his own net. The goal gave Portugal a much-needed boost, and they pushed hard for a winner in the closing stages.

Conceicao, who had only been on the pitch for a few minutes, popped up in the box to meet a cross from Mendes and fire home the decisive goal. The victory moves Portugal to the top of Group A with two wins from two games, while the Czech Republic remain in third place.

The UEFA Nations League is a biennial international football competition contested by the men's national teams of the 55 member associations of UEFA. The tournament was established in 2018 to replace the international friendly matches played during the FIFA International Match Calendar.
